Increase Your Job Security - 7 Tips to Be a Great Team Member
by Mike Weaver
Your job may just depend on it. No pressure. But the reality is the
recession has caused companies to make tough choices about who to keep
and who to let go. Unfortunately, many are being let go. As each month
passes the unemployment level increases. You don't have to be part of
that statistic. While there are no guarantees, the value you add to your
organization may save you from an unexpected layoff. The better you
relate to others in your organization, the harder it is to get rid of
you.
7 tips to be a great team member
1. Be trustworthy - Embrace the three key factors to building
trust with others: reliability, credibility, and transparency.
Organizations need trustworthy people because trust is the bedrock to
success.
2. Listen - Give the gift of an open ear to others on your team.
Be a rebel in your organization and take time to give your full
attention to your team members.
3. Accept - Examine your verbal and non-verbal cues. Do they
communicate openness and acceptance toward others and do others know you
to be approachable? If not, find ways to change the way you relate to
others. Warmth between people creates a strong bond.
4. Add - Add value, ideas, and contributions to others on your team. Seek ways to serve without expecting to receive a kickback.
5. Give all you got - Invest yourself into your role giving all
that you have to it. As you do so, you become a person that others can
count on to deliver.
6. Make others look good - Give up on self-preservation. You
can't save yourself no matter how hard you try. As you raise the value
in others, you raise the value in yourself.
7. Let your ego go - Drop your ego and your need to get ahead of
others, and work humbly for the sake of the greater good that your team
is pursuing. Remember, one of the criteria for you were judged on as a
child was, "Works well with others." I guarantee you, that criteria
hasn't changed now that you're an adult. Team members who work well with
others have staying power.
Bottom line: Your job security may be just dependent on your ability to relate well with others on your team.
